Commemoration of the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Solferino

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Italian Red Cross organized a series of special events in Solferino between 23-28 June to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battle. More than 750 young people from over 150 countries attended these events, which closed with the ‘Fiaccolata’, an impressive 10-kilometer torchlight march by over 14,000 people.

The attendees included the President of the Federation, Don Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro; the Chairman of the Standing Commission, Dr. Mohammed Al-Hadid; President of the Italian Red Cross, Francesco Rocca, the Vice Chairman of the Standing Commission, Mr. Massimo Barra; the President of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Dr. Abdul Rahman ATTAR ; the President of the Croatian Red Cross, Dr. Nenad Javornic; the President of the Mauritius Red Cross, Mr. Ah-Lam Lam Yan Foon; and Dr. Mario Villarroel, President of the Venezuelan Red Cross.
